Kozhikkode has great importance in the history of Kerala and India as well. It is at Kappad near here that Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama arrived in 1498, beginning a new era of European trade and then rule. Kozhikkode was the capital of the Zamorin dynasty. The much famous Uru(small ship) is built here in Beypore. And here in Vadakara were born many valiant Kalari maestros like Thacholi Othenan.
