Malappuram has a very prominent place in the history of Indian independence struggle. The region witnessed violent incidents like the Wagon Tragedy and Khilaphat rebellion of 1921. The Zamorins of Kozhikkode and then the British had great military presence here.
Mamankom, the great pageant festival and congregation of rulers of Malabar was staged here in Thirunavaya, on the banks of Bharathappuzha River. Other major attractions include Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala, the much famed ayurvedic centre and world’s oldest teak plantation in Nilambur.
