Palakkad lies on the lap of the mighty Western Ghats. It is the granary of Kerala, having the largest area under rice cultivation in the state. Long and curvy mountain pass on the eastern border of the district is an important link between Kerala and the neighbouring states.

World renowned Evergreen Forest Silent Valley is the main attraction of the district. Nelliampathy, which ranks among one of the best hill stations in the region, Attappady hills, Parambikkulam wildlife sanctuary, Malampuzha, Meenvallam, Siruvani, Seetharkundu falls are some of the other major destinations.
